Hock Show Weekend Top Five for January 31st – February 6th, 2009

1. The Future for Cell Phones Is The Past. Microsoft has announced that it’s getting rid of it’s “Multiple Apps” system on its next generation phones, and switching back to the single app model. Why? Because nobody ever uses multiple apps on a phone. It’s a hell of a lot easier to do on a PC, but on a phone? Sorry, no.

2. The Super Bowl Was Sunday. New Orleans won its first ever Super Bowl, and surprisingly as of Monday morning, the city hasn’t burned down. That having been said, it was actually a very evenly matched game and, while not as exciting as past Super Bowls, was a pretty nice, even game.

3. The Super Bowl Commercials Were Sunday. Oh, right, this is the real reason anybody watches the game. But this year? Pretty laaaame, if you ask me. The “Tim Tebow” ad that caused so much stink was just boring, Doritos and Budweiser accounted for something like 70% of the ad space, and the best three ads (Bret Favre 2020 NFL MVP, Betty White – backyard football player, and Letterman/Leno/Oprah Super Bowl Party) all were pretty clearly one off ads that didn’t really introduce a campaign or new product.

4. Toyota Is Still Reeling. Weeks after introducing massive recalls because of total system failures in some of their cars, after years of being the top car manufacturer, the truth is finally starting to trickle out. Apparently, the software that controls the onboard systems for the vehicles is a piece of junk that’s basically failing and locking up the car. It’s like a Blue Screen of Death, only with more grevious bodily harm!

5. Facebook E-Mail Coming Soon. Because you don’t waste enough time at work. There really isn’t a call for this is there? Then again, within a few weeks of it dropping, I’ll probably have three accounts and be getting spam and death threats in all of them, so what do I know?
