Hock Show Weekend Top Five for August 8th – 14th, 2010

1. Everybody Hates AT&T. When even CNN is basically going on air and saying, “Can we please take our iPhones off your network?” You know there’s issues. There’s been word for years now that Verizon is trying to work out a deal that would put the iPhone on thier network, but there are still a lot of stumbling blocks before Anderson Cooper can be happy.

2. If You Want to Run a Private Server, Don’t Advertise. A U.S. Federal Court came down hard on Scape Gaming, an operator of a World of Warcraft private server, who made $3 million in subscription fees. Well, the judgement was for $85 million, so…Good luck founders of Scape Gaming! I don’t hate the idea of private servers (which allow you to goof off in the game and see content you wouldn’t normally see), it’s like cheat codes for the game. But you shouldn’t be making money on it.

3. Duke Nukem Forever Ever. Gearbox Software, the makers of Borderlands, are considering taking over development for the 100 year development cycle for Duke Nukem Forever. I guess if anybody could be hand picked for the stupid, misogynistic, ultraviolent Duke Nukem series, the creators of the stupid, misogynistic, ultraviolent Borderlands. So why the hell not? Let’s put it out there.

4. Twitter Is Amazing. Somebody hacked Axl Rose’s Twitter account this week, and broadcast to fans that he was cancelling the current Guns and Roses U.S. tour, causing the band’s dozens of fans to call the venues demanding refunds. Rose got back on as soon as he could, but a lot of the damage was already done. That’s what you get for trusting social media, pretty much everybody.

5. More Proof That Golf Is for Losers. Dustin Johnson surrendered a two stroke lead and lost the PGA Championship, thanks to a weird ruling by PGA tournament officials. Johnson plopped a ball into a patch of sand, and didn’t think too much about it. But when he went to put his club down to look at his lie, officials gave him a two stroke penalty for setting up and not following through, because this little patch of dirt? Was considered a sand trap. Which is sort of hillarious. Apparently there were notices posted about this in the clubhouse, but Johnson didn’t see them. But seriously you guys? Not a sand trap.
